What is Penny rounding?
Penny rounding in Star-Plus is the ability to adjust the final cash transaction total to match the smallest coin your stores plan to use once pennies are no longer part of day-to-day cash handling.
Instead of changing your item prices, Star-Plus rounds the total amount owing after taxes. The adjustment is small, usually just a cent or two, and applies only to cash payments, leaving card and digital transactions untouched.
Ready for Implementation
Star-Plus includes penny rounding capabilities now, so that:
- You’re ready on day one when the penny is removed from circulation.
- Checkout remains familiar for cashiers and customers, with totals that adjust by only a few cents.
- Your systems don’t need a rushed change at the moment a policy or market shift occurs.
- Head office can plan ahead, knowing that rounding is already accounted for in the general ledger.
Rounding General Ledger
When penny rounding is in use, Star-Plus keeps your accounting clean by posting every rounding difference to a dedicated rounding general ledger account. This applies whenever a coin-type method of payment (typically cash) is used and the total is adjusted by a few cents.
As a result, you can:
- See the total impact of rounding across all stores and days.
- Explain minor differences in cash totals with a clear, auditable trail.
- Reconcile your financials confidently as the cash environment changes.
Frequently Asked Questions about Penny Rounding
Does penny rounding change my item prices?
No. Penny rounding in Star-Plus only affects the final cash total at the till. Your individual item prices and tax calculations remain exactly the same, even when pennies are no longer used in change.
Will customers notice a big difference?
Customers will only see small, clearly explained adjustments, usually one or two cents, when paying with cash. The receipt can show a separate rounding line, making it clear why the total was adjusted.
Does rounding apply to card and digital payments?
No. Rounding is designed for coin-type methods of payment, typically cash. Card, debit, and other electronic methods normally charge the exact amount, even after the penny is removed from daily cash handling.
Does penny rounding affect my accounting?
Yes, but Star-Plus automates it. Any difference created by rounding up or down is posted to a dedicated Rounding general ledger account. This gives your finance team a simple way to see and report on the total impact of rounding over time.
Can customers still pay the exact amount?
Yes. When your Star-Plus configuration allows exact amounts for cash, customers can still pay the precise total, provided the change due can be made using coins your stores continue to carry after the penny is removed.
Will the system support nickel rounding in the future if that happens?
Yes. Star-Plus already supports rounding to the nearest nickel by using a five-cent minimum coin denomination for cash. If regulations or company policy move toward nickel rounding in the future, the existing rounding engine will handle it without requiring a new module.
